Mpix vs. Artifact Uprising: Which Wedding Album Is the Better Buy?

A leather photo album next to a linen album on an oak table

The short answer

Choose Mpix if you want a genuine-leather Signature album, pages that are actually thick (0.68 mm), lab turnaround measured in a couple of days, and free shipping over $45. Choose Artifact Uprisingif the linen-and-foil object is the point, you want Superfine matte art paper, or you care more about the unboxing (keepsake box, branded sleeve) than about getting it next week. Mpix's Premium Hardcover linen book starting at $44.99 is a different product from either brand's heirloom album - useful for parent copies, not a substitute for the Signature or the Artifact Uprising layflat. For how this sits in the wider market, see best wedding album makers.

Side by side

  • Wedding-facing products. Mpix Signature Photo Album from $159.99 (leather, 20–100 pages, 8x8 through 12x12). Mpix Premium Hardcover from $44.99 (linen, 0.43 mm pages). Artifact Uprising Layflat from $159 (linen) and Signature from $239 (linen or leather).
  • Page thickness.Mpix Signature 0.68 mm; a 20-page album is about ⅜". Premium Hardcover 0.43 mm; 20 pages about ¼". Artifact Uprising linen layflat: 20 pages 0.625" thick, 90 pages about 2" (~0.04" per page).
  • Paper. Mpix: Semi-Gloss, Glossy, or Deep Matte (giclée, seven dye inks). Artifact Uprising: Lustre photo or Superfine eggshell matte on Mohawk stock.
  • Covers. Mpix Signature is hand-wrapped Italian or vegan leather with foil debossing, no photo on the cover. Artifact Uprising standard is plant-based linen with hand foil stamps; Signature adds leather and tip-on photo styles.
  • Turnaround. Mpix Signature 2–3 business days in lab; Premium Hardcover 1–2. Artifact Uprising 5 business days for linen, 8 for Signature, then shipping.
  • Where it is made. Mpix: Columbia, Missouri, family-owned since 2003. Artifact Uprising: Denver office, assembled in the USA at partner plants.

Prices are starting list prices from each site as of September 2026. Extra pages at Artifact Uprising are published ($5.25–$8.25 each by size). Mpix does not publish a flat extra-page rate - it appears in the editor when you add pages in twos.

What you are actually paying for

The $159 vs $159 starting-price tie is misleading. Mpix's Signature includes leather; Artifact Uprising's $159 is linen. Matching leather means Artifact Uprising Signature from $239. Matching linen means Mpix Premium Hardcover from $45, which has thinner pages. Pick the object, then compare.

Extra spreads still dominate the total at Artifact Uprising. Thirty extra pages on a 10x10 at $5.75 each is $172.50 on top of the base. That is why a “simple” 50-page wedding album is a $300–$500 decision, not a $159 one. Mpix's extra-page cost is unpublished; configure the same page count before you call either cheaper.

Design experience and proofing

Both are DIY drag-and-drop. Neither includes a full design service in the base price. Artifact Uprising now lists a “work with a designer” path and a small-dollar design review. Mpix has no equivalent on the product pages. Proofing is on-screen for both; Mpix does not mail a physical proof. If you have never laid out an album, the cheaper Mpix Premium Hardcover is a reasonable practice run before you spend Signature money - the same logic as using Shutterfly as a draft, except the Mpix linen book is actually layflat. Binding differences are covered in layflat vs. standard binding.

Shipping, reprints, and when Mpix wins on logistics

Mpix includes free standard shipping at $45+, which every album clears. Artifact Uprising charges shipping on every order and says so plainly. If you need the album for a weekend two weeks out, Mpix is the safer production clock. Reprints: both keep the project so you can reorder parent copies. Error policy is the usual print-lab version - they remake defects they caused; they do not remake a layout you approved. International buyers should know Artifact Uprising ships FedEx International Economy with duties on you; Mpix is built around US shipping.

So which should you order?

Leather, fast, made in Missouri: Mpix Signature. Linen, foil, thicker insert pages, slower, more “gift object”: Artifact Uprising. Parent copies and a first attempt: Mpix Premium Hardcover. If you are still comparing labs, Printique vs. Artifact Uprising is the other silver-halide / flush-mount option. And widen the photo pool before you design either one - photographer galleries take weeks to come back, and a guest QR gallery fills the gaps they could not stand in.
